God Gives in What Lacks (Genesis 2)
God Gives in What Lacks
When God gave Adam a wife it is interesting to see what Adam thought of this and what marriage means.
But it is also interesting to see the way God gave Adam his wife in the first place.
The way He worked there reveals a characteristic of God that is often repeated in Scripture. It shows a principle in Him that still exists today.
It was God who brought every beast of the field to Adam to see what he would name them:
[Gen 2:19-20 NKJV] 19 Out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought [them] to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that [was] its name. 20 So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.
He loves seeing His creation interact with each other. God enjoys seeing what we do and think if it is not evil.
But it was this process that brought the realization to Adam that he was alone. Many things that lacked for him were presented to him and thus he could appreciate the gift he would get all the more:
[Gen 2:23 NKJV] 23 And Adam said: "This [is] now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man."
The way he says it shows that he was happy to find someone of his nature which he had not seen before.
Thus the lack of the animals in this part prepared him to appreciate this gift more.
God may well work in this way today too.
Sometimes God allows disappointments to happen, especially in this sinful world. Maybe He allows some stuff that is lacking in certain things. Maybe He shows us that which is not good so that we would appreciate that which is very good all the more.
In this way He prepares us for that which He wants to give.
It is in God's character for Him to want us to appreciate His gifts. He wants us to be thankful and happy. And sometimes this is achieved, ironically as it is, through disappointment.
But in the end He always makes it very good.
[Gen 2:18 NKJV] 18 And the LORD God said, "[It is] not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him."
[Gen 1:31 NKJV] 31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed [it was] very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
In this sinful world it will probably be far more disappointing and lacking stuff than in the days before the fall when Adam lived.
But let us be encouraged. We may well be prepared for a greater gift so that we appreciate both the gift and the Giver all the more.
Though we may not get everything we wish for in the end, we may be certain that what He has in mind is very good. And certain promises are given to us as a surety.
This is a way in which God works and we will see more of this in Scripture later on.
