God Possessor of All (Genesis 14)

 God Possessor of All

After Abram had fought Chedorlaomer and when he had won against him and liberated his nephew, he was reminded of the role of God in all this and His supremacy.

It may have been easy to become prideful about such victory. Or perhaps the fear of a reciprocation would have come to him.

But then Melchizedek came to him, who was a priest of the most High and king of what is now Jerusalem:

[Gen 14:18-20 NKJV] 18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he [was] the priest of God Most High. 19 And he blessed him and said: "Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth; 20 And blessed be God Most High, Who has delivered your enemies into your hand." And he gave him a tithe of all.

Later in regards to the booty he had obtained in war Abram uses the same title:

[Gen 14:22-23 NKJV] 22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, "I have raised my hand to the LORD, God Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth, 23 "that I [will take] nothing, from a thread to a sandal strap, and that I will not take anything that [is] yours, lest you should say, 'I have made Abram rich'--

God is the Possessor of all things. He has made everything and everything is for and from Him.

He can give victory in war to whomever He wishes since He owns everything. He sets up kings and casts them down, as in the case of the powerful Chedorlaomer.

Abram was reminded of this. It was God who had given him the victory in this war. And all the loot was His. He possesses heaven and earth. He is the Most High. Nothing is above Him and all things are under Him.
This is God by nature. In our dealings with Him we should always remember this position He has.
Yes, He loves us and is our friend. But He also has a very real authority, right and power.

And not just any authority.

But the authority as the Most High.
